Dr. Jessalyn Schafer Returns to Albuquerque to Make a Difference in Underserved Communities
Dr. Jessalyn Schafer, a graduate of the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine class of 2021, currently works as an attending physician at Presbyterian Kaseman Outpatient Internal Medicine in Albuquerque.
Her rotations in Albuquerque, made possible through the partnership between Burrell College and the Presbyterian network, motivated her decision to return to the city.
“My clinical rotations within the Presbyterian network were integral to my decision to return to Albuquerque and work with Presbyterian again,” Dr. Schafer said. “I am back home and happy to be working with the Presbyterian network again.”
Burrell College gave Dr. Schafer the opportunity to serve underserved populations in New Mexico through rotations in communities like Farmington.
“The biggest factor that was beneficial for me was not only rotating in Albuquerque but also rotating in the Four Corners of Farmington,” Dr. Schafer said. “Serving an underserved population had a huge impact on where I am today.”
Advice for Current Students
Dr. Schafer emphasizes the importance of current Burrell students keeping their options open throughout their journey in medical school.
“Always keep your options open and keep your mind open to all the different specialties and all types of practices,” Dr. Schafer said. “Even if you have your mind made up, you might end up loving something else.”
